What Type of Awards Does the Board Make?

Awards are made at the discretion of the Board Members reviewing the individual cases. There are four types of awards made by the Board, including:

  1. Lump Sum Award: Can vary up to $25,000 per incident depending on injury. If more than one person is affected by an occurrence, the Board can award a total of $150,000 to all of the applicants.
  2. Periodic/Monthly Award: These awards can be made in cases where there is permanent injury or loss of support. The maximum payment is $1,000 per month, totalling $365,000 for all applicants affected by a single occurrence. If a periodic award is made, the amount of the lump sum component cannot exceed $12,500 according to Section 19(1) of the Act. Periodic Payments may be reviewed by the Board at any time, under Section 25 of the Act.
  3. Interim Award: Section (14) of the Act allows the Board to consider making an award for expenses (medical, therapy and support) before a hearing is held. This can only be considered if the Board receives a properly completed claim package and supporting police information. For claims exceeding two-years, you will not be eligible for an interim award unless your request for an extension has been approved.
  4. Variation Award: Section (25) of the Act allows the Board to vary an award based on a change in the claimant’s circumstances. The process of varying the award is the same as when the claim was first filed. The variation (change) can be considered at the claimant’s request or at the Board’s instruction. A variation can only be granted if an award was made.
